BBFC Ratings

BBFC RATING.

The rating of our film is going to be a 15; we finalised with this as we look around on the internet at other zombie movies and inspired us to have a 15 rating because of the content. In order to retain their value to the public, BBFC ratings must be used in a consistent and correct fashion; thats why we chose to make the rating a 15.

One of the film that inspired us was World War Z. This film is also rated a 15 as the content of the film can be unsuitable for ages under the BBFC rating. Also another film that inspired us was Shaun of the dead.

The reason why Shaun of the dead was rated a 15 is because there is enough blood, guts, to turn your stomach and avert your eyes. It is extremely violent - zombies and human trying to kill each other in everyday possible; biting, shooting, stabbing impaling etc. Also, there is a lot of smoking and drinking; and there are a few references to drugs.

World War Z is rated a 15 because it tones down
the blood and gore that are trademarks of most
zombie movies. It is tense but not overly graphic,
some scenes include a woman arm being chopped off and people choosing suicide over
infection. Language is sparse but features a few swear words.

As I have identified why some other films BBFC rating is a 15; i think this links very well with mine as my film will contain strong languages , violence , blood, smoking and maybe drinking. Its going to be intense but not overly graphic.

Movie Opening Credits

Movie Opening Credits Analysis

Fast and Furious 7   Genre A: Action

In fast and furious 7, there is a soundtrack during the opening scene; as the characters within the film cant hear them but the audience can solely. In addition there are different types of layers playing on each other which means its densely textured. The music which is being played is hip-hop which creates a sense of crime, violence and action which may be exemplified in the film. However, there is no dialogue but it is also diegetic as there is sound made by objects and characters.

In the opening scene , we see a man talking to another man briefly; this leads into an establishing shot as we know where they're located. It is the footage from the film, as it is the opening sequence. It starts off straight into the film, then into the titles. The colors start off very dark and is used to symbolize things like anger and a sense of mysteriousness.

The font is blurred which almost makes it seem like its moving; this fits really well with the film. It is a white color, looks professional and clean. It links to the genre very well as its about action and the fact that it seems like its moving is an excellent way of portraying it. The genre is established through things like blowing up and exploding which creates the genre of action.

Mission Impossible   Genre B: Thriller/Action/Spy

There is a soundtrack. The music is jazz which can seem soothing but also energizing because of the upbeat tune. We don't get dialogue until the opening song has finished. It has some diegetic sounds in there , for example when the bomb is being lit up; it makes the sound of it igniting .

We see some faces of the subjects in the film revealing the identity; also things like bombs, guns and spy equipment. Also people working, trying to solve important cases. It is an establishing shot as it reveals things like location, who they are and weather. However, it is not just the titles in the opening sequence as there is some action in it.

Some of the fonts are very big, emphasizing the main areas, whereas some are very small meaning it isn't as vital to acknowledge. The colors white and blue were used . It links to the genre as it is slightly slanted which may not mean that, things may not be given to you and you have to fix/ sort it out yourself. The genre is established through things blowing up and through things like spy gadgets and weapons.

The Hangover  Genre C: Comedy

There is a soundtrack in the opening sequence. The characters within the film can't hear them but the audience can. The music being played is blues, this genre of music creates the mood of a beautiful kind of pain and sadness. There are diegetic sounds in there as we can hear things like telephones in the back-ground and dialogue throughout.

We can see the arrangements of a wedding taking place but however, the smooth transition into the next scene seems like something may be up. Furthermore, it is an establishing shot as it reveals things like the location they're in. It is not just the titles by it self, as it includes people doing things in the background.

The font are big and bold, it is a white color and looks very professional and clean. At first the font changes from the atmosphere it is in (wedding) then goes into a different font as the atmosphere changes again. The fact that there is some dialogue in there, talking about a wedding and then one of the characters saying they've messed up, it seems kinda ironic as the men usually say the women are the ones to usually take the longest and more likely to mess up. This creates a sense of comedy.

Todorov's Narrative Theory & Our Plot.

Equilibrium - Todorov Narrative Theory

Narrative Theory:

Narrative theory studies the devices and conventions governing the organization of a story (Fictional or Factual) into a sequence. Todorov suggested that stories begin with the equilibrium or status quo where any potential of opposing forces are balanced; this is disrupted by some events, setting in chain a series of events. Problems are solved so that the order can be restored to the world of the fiction.
Todorov suggested that the conventional narratives are structured into 5 stages, beginning with:

1. State of Equilibrium

2. Disruption of that Equilibrium

3. Recognition that disorder has occurred

4. Attempt (or attempts) to resolve the situation

5. Return to equilibrium or establishment of a new equilibruim

Home Alone:

1. State of Equilibruim:

Macualay Culkin (Kevin) and his family were relaxing at home in a very christmassy atmosphere, thinking in advance about the holiday that was approaching near by.

2. Disruption of that Equilibrium:

As Macualay Culkin was misbehaving the night before him and his family were going on holiday, he was sent into a different room to sleep in to avoid conflict with his brother (Buzz). In the chaotic morning, the family woke up late as there was a problem with the electrics disrupting the alarm clocks, by having a large affluent family; They somehow forgot to wake up Kevin (Macualay Culkin) as they dispersed towards the airport, leaving Kevin home alone (hence the name).

3. Recognition that disorder has occurred:

Recognition that disorder has occurred can be noted when the burglars (Marv and Harry) try take advantage of the fact that they think nobody's home. Whereas in reality, Kevin was left at home unintentionally.

4. Attempt (or Attempts) to resolve the situation:

Macualay Culkin (Kevin) tries to resolve the situation of his house being burgled; by setting booby traps all around his house in order to stop them.

5. Return to equilibrium or establishment of a new equilibrium:

Equilibrium is returned when the old man (neighbor) helps Macualay Culkin to take down the burglars. It also is returned when the police arrest the burglars and take them to prison; leaving everything in the film back to normal.

Breaking the rule of Todorov's Theory:

Some directors break the rule to get a unique feel to the movie. Yet this is very hard to pull of successfully. Breaking the rule can leave the audience feeling unsatisfied with the ending. For Example: The film Lucy - This went against the theory as the ending was completely different to the equilibrium; leaving the ending of the film unfulfilling

Plot Of Our Film:

1. State of Equilibrium:

- Everything is normal, main character is just chilling at home with some of his friends; eating some dominos acting like nothing catastrophic is going to happen.

2. Disruption of the equilibrium:

- The disruption of the equilibrium is that the zombie apocalypse breaks out and the characters are oblivious until they come to their house.

3. Recognition that disorder has occurred:

- People start boarding up houses and start making bases; realization that something like this has occurred and there is no going back. Start gathering armory just in case they need to use it.

4. Attempt (or attempts) to resolve the situation:

- People try to kill the zombie trying to make sure more and more people don't get infected; the CIA/FBI come into action try and help - making traps in order to eliminate the infectious zombies.

5. Establishment of a new equilibrium:

- The zombies start taking over the world as more people got infected; start killing everyone and no-one can do nothing about it.
